Jailed Kashmiri leader and newly elected Member of Parliament Sheikh Abdul Rashid, widely known as Engineer Rashid, is poised to take his parliamentary oath on July 5. This follows the National Investigation Agency (NIA) granting consent before a special court on Monday.

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh is expected to pass an order on the matter on Tuesday. During the hearing, the NIA's counsel stipulated that Rashid's oath-taking should include conditions such as refraining from media interactions and completing the process within one day.

Rashid, an Independent MP from Baramulla, has been in Tihar Jail since August 2019 for his alleged involvement in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. He moved the court seeking interim bail or alternatively, custody parole, in order to take his parliamentary oath and fulfill his duties. His counsel cited a similar case involving AAP leader Sanjay Singh; however, the court acknowledged differing charges.
