Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dhumbre has tightened the reins on bars and restaurants by issuing prohibitory orders effective until August 27, an official disclosed on Monday.

The notification, enacted under Section 144 of the CrPC on June 29, emphasizes collective action over individual notices, the official added.

The commissioner highlighted recurring incidents endangering public peace and security in these establishments, attributing this to negligence or deliberate actions by proprietors. Additionally, some patrons' improper behavior exacerbates the sense of insecurity among other customers, including women, thereby necessitating this sweeping mandate.

In efforts to ensure public safety, the notification mandates the closure of such establishments by 1:30 am, restricts liquor service to those above 18, and requires prior police clearance for foreign performers. Comprehensive CCTV coverage and storage of footage for 30 days are also obligatory.

The directive further prohibits alcohol service on rooftops or open spaces without the necessary permits and insists on adherence to noise level regulations. Prominently displayed boards banning drugs are also required.

This crackdown follows a Maharashtra government drive against irregularities in bars and restaurants, spurred by a video showing drug use in a Pune establishment.
