In a significant move, the Modi government has facilitated dignified lives for numerous families impacted by the Partition by conferring Indian nationality under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), President Droupadi Murmu announced on Thursday.
During her address to a joint session of both Houses of Parliament at the onset of the 18th Lok Sabha, President Murmu highlighted the contentious CAA and commended the government's initiative to start granting citizenship to eligible refugees under the Act.
'It has ensured a dignified life for many families who have suffered due to the Partition. I wish a better future for the families who have been granted citizenship under the CAA,' she expressed.
The inaugural set of citizenship certificates under the CAA were issued to 14 individuals in Delhi on May 15. Following this, the Union government extended citizenship grants to West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and other regions across India.
Enacted in December 2019, the CAA aims to offer Indian citizenship to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. The CAA was granted presidential assent post-enactment, with the citizenship rules being officially released over four years later on March 11.
