A sessions court in Navi Mumbai has dismissed an application by notorious gangster Abu Salem challenging his intended relocation from Taloja prison to another facility within Maharashtra. Salem, serving life for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bombings, alleged that the move was a plot to endanger his life as he expected a release soon.

Salem claimed that Taloja offered him sufficient protection and that rival gang members could attack him in other jails. The prison authorities, however, argued that his current cell required urgent reconstruction, leaving no other secure cells available at Taloja.

Judge B D Shelke heard arguments from both parties before denying Salem's plea. However, he granted a stay on the transfer until July 3, allowing Salem to seek relief from the higher court. Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005 and received a life sentence for his role in the 1993 bombings in 2017.
