The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to entertain the bail plea of Samajwadi Party MLA Ramakant Yadav, implicated in a spurious liquor case responsible for nine deaths in Azamgarh in 2022.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal chose not to interfere with the Allahabad High Court's decision to deny Yadav bail.

Yadav's counsel opted to withdraw the plea after sensing the bench's disinclination to entertain it. Consequently, the matter was dismissed as withdrawn.

Yadav had sought the Supreme Court's intervention against the May 14 High Court order rejecting his bail, which directed the trial court to complete the examination of the remaining witnesses within four months.

The court noted that the first bail application had been rejected on 06.09.2023, with a directive to expedite and conclude the trial within six months. However, only six witnesses have been examined so far.

The High Court had emphasized that while some material witnesses had been examined, key witnesses' statements were still pending. Given the trial's current stage, it deemed releasing Yadav on bail as unjust and improper.

A February 2022 FIR at Ahraula police station in Azamgarh, where nine people died from consuming spurious liquor, did not initially include Yadav's name. However, his name was added in September 2022.
