Around 1,500 families have begun clearing illegally encroached forest and railway land in Assam's Morigaon district, an official announced on Monday.
Following a government directive issued on June 12, the families were instructed to vacate within 10 days. District Commissioner Devashish Sarma noted the encroachment in Silbhanga village, Jagiroad, affecting approximately 10,000 people.
According to Sarma, 'A notice was served to the area residents on June 12, and most have complied.' Special arrangements have been made for families with children appearing in examinations, allowing them to stay until the exams are completed.
'Our administration aims to clear the land without using force or demolishing structures. Nearly 80 percent of the families have already begun moving their belongings, following negotiations,' said Sarma. During a site visit, Sarma ensured no untoward incidents occurred, and security forces were deployed.
'We hope the clearance will be conducted peacefully,' the District Commissioner concluded.
