Arif Abubakar Shaikh, alias Bhaijan, the brother-in-law of fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel, passed away on Friday evening at Mumbai's J J Hospital, according to police sources.

Shaikh, 61, was a businessman arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on terrorism funding charges. His arrest implicated several members of the notorious Dawood gang, including Dawood Ibrahim and Shakeel. Following his arrest, Shaikh was held at Arthur Road jail and was undergoing treatment at J J Hospital at the time of his death, an official informed.

The NIA had also attached Shaikh's property in Mira Road, Thane, as proceeds of terrorism in July 2023.
