The Kremlin has categorically denied reports alleging a phone call between U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Trump reportedly advised Putin to refrain from escalating the conflict in Ukraine. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, described the allegations as 'pure fiction.'
The denial follows a report from The Washington Post citing alleged sources that Trump, speaking from Mar-a-Lago in Florida, engaged in a conversation with the Russian leader. Peskov refuted these claims on Monday, dismissing the media reports as unfounded and noting, 'This is completely untrue. There was no conversation.'
When asked about potential future communications between Trump and Putin, Peskov noted the absence of any specific plans. Meanwhile, The Washington Post suggested that Trump reminded Putin of the U.S.'s strong military presence in Europe during the alleged call.
