Sri Lanka's quest to join the BRICS alliance remains unresolved, as the Foreign Ministry confirmed that the nation's application is still being evaluated. Despite recent media claims of rejection, Sri Lanka maintains its intention to become a part of the influential economic group.
The Foreign Ministry highlighted its proactive approach, with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath communicating directly with BRICS member nations, expressing Sri Lanka's aspirations for membership. The statement assured that decisions on applications from Sri Lanka and other countries are pending within BRICS's internal processes.
Additionally, Sri Lanka's ambition to join the New Development Bank (NDB) has been positively received, as announced by the president of the NDB. BRICS, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later South Africa, continues to broaden its membership, recently incorporating four new nations.
