China and Pakistan, traditionally steadfast allies, are showing signs of strain in their relationship. Beijing's envoy to Islamabad recently voiced concerns over the safety of Chinese nationals working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, marking a rare public departure from their usual diplomatic discourse, as reported by Dawn.
Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch described the Chinese ambassador's statement as 'perplexing,' given the historically positive diplomatic interactions between the two nations. The statement by China's Ambassador Jiang Zaidong comes amid increasing violence against Chinese workers in Pakistan, highlighted by recent deadly attacks claimed by militant groups.
This rising insecurity has drawn criticism from China, urging Pakistan to enhance protective measures and address anti-China elements. The issue is expected to dominate talks during planned high-level visits and meetings, as Pakistan seeks to reassure China of its commitment to the safety of its nationals.
