India unveiled its revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Cali, calling for international funding to support its ambitious conservation goals. Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, stressed the importance of resources in delivering these objectives, aligning the plan with the global Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework.
The updated NBSAP reflects India's 'Whole of Government' and 'Whole of Society' approach, aiming to meet both national and global biodiversity targets, including protecting 30% of land and sea and enhancing ecosystem resilience. Singh urged for rapid mobilization of financial and technological resources as outlined in the framework's targets.
Singh highlighted India's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, introducing initiatives like 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' to promote sustainable practices.
