Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced Monday that efforts are underway between the Russian and Indian governments to liberate 20 Indian nationals, reportedly recruited under dubious circumstances, from military duties in Russia. So far, 85 have been successfully discharged.
During a special media briefing, Misri confirmed the diplomatic engagement was spearheaded at the highest levels, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly appealing to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The return of these individuals is being treated as a priority, particularly in light of fatalities among the Indians involved.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated concerns over the recruitment issue. He highlighted that many Indians might have been lured with misleading job offers, later finding themselves conscripted into the military. Assurances have been made by the Russian leadership for their swift return.
