In a significant move, the G7 Defence Ministers convened in Naples, Italy for their first defence-focused meeting, where China faced criticism for its aggressive conduct near Taiwan. A joint statement from the meeting emphasized the group's unified resolve to tackle security threats during a period of significant instability, according to the Taipei Times.

Representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US reaffirmed their dedication to a free and open Indo-Pacific based on lawful principles and called for peaceful dispute resolution. The ministers also voiced their support for Ukraine and concern over Middle East tensions while condemning North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

The statement underscored the importance of maintaining calm across the Taiwan Strait, criticizing China's recent military maneuvers in the area and advocating for peaceful solutions to cross-strait tensions. There was also strong opposition to China's broad maritime claims in the South China Sea, alongside criticism of its obstructive maritime practices.

Furthermore, the G7 highlighted their apprehensions regarding China's bolstering of Russia's war capabilities and military alliance. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acknowledging the defense ministers' actions, expressed gratitude for their support in maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait and committed to strengthening cooperation with G7 nations.
