China's growing influence in the maritime regions surrounding Taiwan is encountering formidable international opposition, according to a recent report from Taiwan's National Security Bureau (NSB). The report, presented to the Legislative Yuan, highlights Beijing's moves in the Taiwan Strait and neighboring seas, eliciting robust international responses. It stresses that the strategic competition between the US and China remains unchanged, as noted by the Taipei Times.
The US is keenly monitoring China's coercive "gray zone" tactics within the Indo-Pacific. Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait, even as Beijing asserts its right to enforce laws in the South China Sea and seeks to marginalize American influence as outlined in international treaties.
The NSB further reports China's decision to halt arms control discussions with the US, in response to America's containment strategies. Chinese President Xi Jinping is gearing up the military for potential naval confrontations while advancing "modern" maritime defenses. Additionally, China has expanded jurisdiction in the region with laws allowing the Coast Guard to detain vessels in contested waters, increasing its maritime surveillance and patrol activities.
China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has been intensifying its military activities near Taiwan, enhancing coastal airports and conducting integrated military exercises to illustrate its policing and military capabilities. Moreover, the PLA has frequently intruded into Taiwan's restrictive waters, deploying a mix of military and civilian vessels to broaden its "gray zone" operations, allegedly to exert pressure on Taipei, as reported by the Taipei Times.
Internationally, the PLA conducted joint exercises with Russia in the South China Sea for the first time in nearly a decade. Allegations of aggressive maritime actions towards the Philippine Coast Guard have sharpened global scrutiny, with the US and allies stressing the necessity to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait. As part of its Indo-Pacific strategy, the US has fortified alliances with Japan and other regional players, including the AUKUS and Quad formations.
European nations have also intensified their focus on regional stability by conducting more frequent transits and joint exercises through the Taiwan Strait, as detailed in the NSB report. (ANI)
