Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita represented India at the inauguration ceremony of Indonesia’s newly elected President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming on Sunday. In a post on the social media platform, X, Margherita emphasized the significance of 2024 as both nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.

President Prabowo, who previously served as the defense minister under Joko Widodo, secured a victory in the February 14 election with a 59 percent vote share. Alongside Vice President Gibran, they aim to further Widodo’s development policies. Minister Margherita also paid tribute at Indonesia’s National Monument, a symbol of the country's struggle for independence.

During his visit, Margherita engaged with representatives of Indian businesses in Indonesia to discuss ongoing investment projects. He noted Indonesia’s status as India’s second-largest trade partner within ASEAN. The history of India-Indonesia relations is deeply rooted, spanning cultural and commercial engagements over two millennia and collaborative efforts through the Non-Aligned Movement.

The involvement of Margherita in this inauguration underscores India's dedication to bolstering the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Indonesia. This visit is a testament to India’s broader strategy and commitment towards enhancing ties with global south partners, aligning with PM Modi’s vision for a united global south.
