The European Parliament expressed grave concerns over China's persistent suppression of dissent, particularly among those critical of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). During a session in Strasbourg on Thursday, they spotlighted the plight of unjustly imprisoned Uyghur activists in China.

Parliament members voted to adopt a resolution demanding the immediate release of prominent figures like Ilham Tohti, a 2019 Sakharov Prize laureate, and Gulshan Abbas, among others arbitrarily detained. The MEPs decried the extensive human rights violations against Uyghurs, Tibetans, and people from Hong Kong and Macau, calling for the closure of internment camps and denouncing oppressive policies as possible genocide acts.

The resolution, passed with overwhelming support, also urges the EU to impose further sanctions on officials accountable for these abuses and to combat the transnational repression of Chinese dissidents. This move underscores the diplomatic pressure mounting on China to rectify its human rights record and end wrongful imprisonments in the Uyghur region.
