The sound of needles buzzed as artists inked bodies with a blend of deities and modern elements at the Himalayan Tattoo Summit 0.1. This event, backed by the National Academy of Fine Arts and Nepal Handicraft Association, convened over four dozen artists merging traditional motifs with contemporary designs. The summit kicked off on Friday.

Featured designs included Ganesh, Living Goddess Kumari, Buddha, and Hanuman, intertwined with modern concepts. Sujit Rai, an artist, remarked on the changing landscape, noting, 'People now research designs before getting inked, a shift that makes me happy.' His work exemplifies the fusion of neo-traditional and modern ink art.

Tattooing in Nepal, a long-held tradition among groups like the Newa, Tharu, Gurung, and Magar, is evolving. Historically, tattoos linked to spiritual beliefs are now appreciated for aesthetics by the youth, who integrate traditional and modern designs. Traditional methods using coal and plant-based inks have given way to modern techniques. Brijesh Shrestha, from the organizing committee, emphasized the summit's role in connecting with international artists and showcasing Nepal's rich tattoo culture.

In Kathmandu Valley, tattoos were traditionally done during festivals such as Rato Machindra Jatra and Indra Jatra. The practice, known locally as 'Lha: Chyogu,' has deeper cultural meanings. Despite the evolution, the essence of tattooing endures, symbolizing personal and cultural identity. Today, Nepal stands out as a premier, affordable destination for tattoos, with its artists gaining international recognition for their creativity and artistry.
