The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, has condemned Israel's deadly airstrikes in Khan Younis, a densely populated area designated as a humanitarian zone. The attack, which occurred on September 10, targeted a zone where displaced people were taking shelter.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes aimed at Hamas militants operating from a command-and-control center within the humanitarian zone. However, Wennesland highlighted the necessity to adhere to international humanitarian law at all times, emphasizing principles like distinction, proportionality, and precautions in attack to avoid civilian casualties. He also stressed that civilians should never be used as human shields.
Wennesland reiterated that the ongoing violence signifies that nowhere is safe in Gaza. He called for an immediate agreement between all sides to release hostages and establish a ceasefire, stating that the killing of civilians must end. He advocated for a political solution, noting that only a two-state resolution can end the suffering of both Palestinians and Israelis. The United Nations is prepared to support efforts towards this goal.
