The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Burkina Faso. In a statement on August 29, the Council condemned the heinous attacks leading to civilian casualties in the region, including the August 24 attack in Barsalogho claimed by the Al-Qaida-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM).
The Security Council members extended their deepest condolences to the victims' families, the transitional authorities, and the people of Burkina Faso, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. The Council reaffirmed that terrorism remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security.
Emphasizing the necessity of bringing the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these terror acts to justice, the Council called on all States to fulfill their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. They also expressed concern over the security situation in Burkina Faso and the broader Sahel region.
The UN Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, consists of 15 Members, each having one vote. All Member States are obligated to adhere to Council decisions as per the Charter of the United Nations.
