By Diksha Rathore. Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren on Wednesday highlighted India as a 'very important partner' and expressed hopes to advance bilateral ties through a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

During his two-day official visit, Klaveren co-chaired the second India-Chile Joint Commission Meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Klaveren's visit offers a platform to review progress and explore new cooperation avenues, further strengthening bilateral ties.

'We admire India for its growth, culture, and civilization. There's significant potential to expand our economic and political ties,' Klaveren told ANI. On the CEPA negotiations, he expressed optimism, stating necessary preparations have been made, and they were confident of successful advancements.

Chile's trade with India reached USD 560 million in 2022, with 30% in food exports. Historical ties include a Partial Scope Agreement since 2007. Jaishankar highlighted Chile's role in the Voice of Global South Summits, commending President Gabriel Boric's insights at the latest summit.

Klaveren's visit continues recent diplomatic engagements, including meetings with CBI officials addressing technology-enabled crimes and drug trafficking. Recent talks with India's Agriculture Minister focused on resolving agricultural trade challenges, emphasizing sustainable practices and market access for various products like mangoes, pomegranates, bananas, and basmati rice.

The meeting included key officials from both sides, underscoring the commitment to strengthening the agricultural partnership and broadening the range of traded products.
