In a pivotal meeting on August 27, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te welcomed Ohashi Mitsuo, Chairman of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing regional stability. Central to their dialogue was the establishment of a 'democratic umbrella,' aiming to unite democracies worldwide in promoting shared values such as freedom, peace, and prosperity.

President Lai acknowledged Ohashi Mitsuo's significant contributions to Taiwan-Japan relations since his appointment in 2011, emphasizing the deep friendship and cooperation between the maritime nations. Lai expressed hopes that the Taiwan-Japan Maritime Cooperation Dialogue would bolster collaboration in the maritime sector, addressing global issues and becoming a solid force for regional peace and prosperity.

A key discussion point was Taiwan's bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Lai urged Japan to support Taiwan's application, highlighting the strategic benefits for both nations. Security concerns, especially China's growing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific, were also a major topic, with both leaders recognizing the critical role of Taiwan-Japan collaboration in maintaining peace and deterring potential conflicts.

Lai reiterated Taiwan's commitment to its 'Four Pillars of Peace,' stressing the importance of national defense, economic resilience, international deterrence, and principled dialogue with China. The 'democratic umbrella' is seen as a coalition of like-minded nations committed to these principles. Additionally, Lai announced the appointment of Lee I-yang as Taiwan's new envoy to Japan, signaling a new chapter in Taiwan-Japan relations and closer cooperation under Lee's leadership.
