The United States has called on India to back efforts aimed at achieving a lasting and just peace for Ukraine, in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Russia. During his bilateral talks, Modi discussed the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the tragic impact on children.

Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, underscored the importance of the India-U.S. partnership. 'India continues to be a country with which we partner in numerous key areas,' Patel stated, referencing Modi's state visit to the US last summer. He urged all partners, including India, to support peace efforts in Ukraine and called for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed disappointment over Modi's visit, labeling it a setback to peace initiatives. Modi had raised concerns about the loss of innocent lives, especially children, during his discussions with Putin. 'Everyone who believes in humanity is pained by the loss of lives,' Modi stated, following a missile strike that killed 37 children in Kyiv.
