Subhash Prasad Gupta, currently serving as India's Deputy Chief of Mission in Hanoi, has been appointed as the next ambassador to Suriname, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Foreign Service Officer, part of the 2006 batch, is expected to assume his new role soon, the MEA confirmed.
In an official statement, the MEA said, "Shri Subhash Prasad Gupta (IFS:2006), presently Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy of India, Hanoi, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Suriname." They added that Gupta is anticipated to take up his assignment in the near future.
India and Suriname enjoy close, warm, and friendly relations, bolstered by century-old cultural and people-to-people connections, noted the MEA. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1976, with embassies opened in Paramaribo in 1977 and in New Delhi in 2000. Numerous high-level visits have taken place since then.
In 2023, President Droupadi Murmu made her maiden foreign visit to Suriname at the invitation of President Santokhi, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. Earlier, in February, a Surinamese delegation led by National Assembly Chairman Marinus Bee visited Ayodhya, participating in spiritual and cultural activities, including prayers at the Ram Temple and a boat ride on the Sarayu River.
