London [UK], July 5 (ANI) - Rishi Sunak, the outgoing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressed deep regret and offered an apology after the Conservative Party's devastating defeat in the general election on Friday. Addressing the nation from 10 Downing Street, Sunak accepted responsibility for the party's worst performance in recent times and announced his resignation.

"To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change, and yours is the only judgement that matters," Sunak said. At 44, Sunak's resignation marks the beginning of a leadership contest within the Conservative Party.

The election results declared Labour Party's Keir Starmer as the next Prime Minister, who is expected to meet with King Charles shortly to form a new government. The Conservative Party suffered a staggering loss of over 250 seats, shifting to opposition status.

Sunak acknowledged the voters' sentiments and thanked Conservative candidates and campaigners for their efforts. "To all the conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly, but without success, I am sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved," he said, reflecting on his 21-month premiership.

Highlighting his achievements, Sunak pointed to the stabilization of the economy and improved relations with allies, alongside a significant deal with the European Union post-Brexit. "Inflation is back to target, mortgage rates are falling, and growth has returned. Our United Kingdom is stronger too. With the Windsor Framework, devolution restored in Northern Ireland, and our union strengthened," he stated.

Sunak concluded his farewell speech by wishing his successor, Starmer, well. "Whilst he has been my political opponent, Keir Starmer will shortly become our prime minister. In this job, his successes will be all our successes, and I wish him and his family well," Sunak remarked.

The transition of power will see Sunak calling on King Charles, who will then invite Starmer to form the next government.
