The Berhampur Circle Jail in Odisha's Ganjam district has earned the 'Eat Right Campus' certification, highlighting its commitment to food safety and sustainability. This accolade, awarded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), underscores the institution's efforts in promoting healthy and safe food practices for its inmates.
The FSSAI, operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has granted a two-year certification to the 162-year-old jail, marking it with three stars for satisfactory compliance with FSSAI's evaluation criteria. Senior superintendent D N Barik lauded the jail's dedication to food safety, noting its rigorous assessment process and adherence to prescribed standards.
The certification process included comprehensive audits to ensure basic hygiene and the provision of healthy food, supported by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation. The jail cooks meals for 1,000 inmates daily under hygienic conditions. Additionally, 50 members of the jail staff and prisoners have received food safety training and certification.
