Digital Eye Strain: A Growing Concern Amidst Increased Screen Time
Experts warn of rising myopia cases due to extended digital device usage, especially among children. Doctors are raising alarms about the surge in myopia cases, with nearly half of the population at risk due to excessive screen time. This concern is particularly acute among children, whose screen exposure skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, replacing crucial outdoor activities with digital learning.
Highlighting the issue at ASSOCHAM's 'Illness to Wellness' summit, experts like Dr. Anuj Mehta from Safdarjung Hospital and Dr. (Brig) Vijay Mathur from Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals underscored the strain prolonged screen use places on young eyes. Once rare beyond adolescence, refractive errors now extend well into adulthood.
The summit also revealed critical connections between eye health and general wellness, with recommendations including the 20-20-20 rule and promoting regular outdoor activities. Strategies like these aim to arrest the accelerated myopia progression and safeguard overall health.
