A recent study uncovers that about 25% of the Indian population is within an hour's reach of a rehabilitation center for ischaemic strokes, which account for up to 80% of strokes in the country.
Published in the International Journal of Stroke, the research indicates the shortage of specialized stroke centers, revealing there is less than one center per million people in India. The study involved collaborations with institutions like the US' Ascension Health and AIIMS, Hyderabad, detailing 566 stroke centers across 26 states.
With over 60% of these centers offering advanced endovascular therapy, improving access to stroke care remains crucial, especially in underserved areas. Researchers highlight an average distance of 115 to 130 kilometers to the nearest treatment facility. Increased access to such centers is vital to enhance patient outcomes.
