An organisation dedicated to aiding Bhopal gas tragedy survivors initiated a protest on Wednesday, demanding the urgent restoration of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration for Sambhavna Trust, known for its healthcare services to survivors.
The Union Carbide Poison Victims Healthcare Rights Front spearheaded the protest, pressing the Union Home Ministry for a swift reinstatement of FCRA registration for the Trust. The closure of Sambhavna Trust Clinic, attributed to halted funds due to the delayed FCRA registration, has left many without access to necessary healthcare. The Bhopal gas leak, stemming from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in December 1984, is renowned as one of the world's deadliest industrial disasters.
The sit-in, held in Bafna Colony near the defunct factory, saw participation from 14 individuals, including survivors and clinic staff, highlighting the crucial need for restored funding. Chandrahas Shukla, a journalist and Sambhavna patient, emphasized the importance of FCRA approval for receiving international donations, reinforcing the clinic's role in successful treatment for disaster victims.
