Escalation in Gaza: Strikes Intensify as Civilians Struggle
Overnight Israeli military strikes in Gaza have killed at least 18 people, with Palestinian medics reporting severe difficulties in reaching affected areas. The conflict, focused on the Jabalia refugee camp, has forced over 400,000 people into dire conditions as evacuation options remain perilously limited.
At least 18 deaths were reported after Israeli military strikes targeted Gaza overnight, as confirmed by Palestinian medics on Wednesday. The attacks come as Israeli forces intensify operations in the northern Jabalia refugee camp, aiming to thwart Hamas militants from regrouping and launching further assaults.
The situation for civilians remains dire, with Palestinian and U.N. officials highlighting a lack of safe havens amidst repeated evacuation orders. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, lamented that over 400,000 people are trapped, and hunger is becoming widespread due to depleted supplies.
In addition to the humanitarian crisis, the violence threatens public health efforts, notably disrupting the polio vaccination campaign for children. The conflict arises from ongoing tensions, fueled by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which claimed over a thousand lives and led to a significant Israeli military response.
