Pakistan has reported 26 polio cases this year, with two new cases detected in the Sindh province, authorities announced Wednesday. The latest cases were identified in Karachi East and Sujawal districts, highlighting a significant setback in the country's efforts to eradicate the poliovirus.

According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health, environmental samples have recently shown the presence of poliovirus in these areas, posing a grave risk to children's well-being. Prime Minister's Focal Person for Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza Farooq, described the new cases as 'heartbreaking' for Pakistani children still at risk from an easily preventable disease.

Farooq emphasized the necessity of repeated vaccination, urging parents, community leaders, and teachers to ensure every child receives the vaccine. The Pakistan Polio Programme is implementing a strategic roadmap to control virus spread and halt transmission by mid-2025, with a recent mass vaccination campaign reaching 33 million children under five. Plans for another mass vaccination drive are set for October 28. Authorities continue to develop effective strategies to cover every child, particularly in mobile and migrant communities.
