The Glaucoma Society of India is convening its 33rd annual conference in Puducherry, beginning Friday for a three-day event.

The former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and ex-IPS officer Kiran Bedi will inaugurate the conference, drawing 650 delegates nationwide, a society release revealed on Thursday.

Over 100 prominent glaucoma specialists from across India will give talks, alongside six distinguished international experts from the US and UK, who are scheduled to address the gathering.

Highlighting glaucoma as a 'silent thief of eyesight,' the release noted that it is the second leading cause of blindness and the primary cause of irreversible blindness globally. Despite affecting over 12 million people in India, awareness remains alarmingly low, with only 5 to 10 percent of the population informed about the condition.

The conference will focus on crucial aspects of glaucoma care, including screening, the application of artificial intelligence in diagnosis and management, advanced treatment strategies, and the latest developments in the field.

The event is anticipated to serve as an invaluable platform for ophthalmologists, researchers, and industry leaders to collaborate, share insights, and explore innovative approaches to enhance glaucoma care and treatment outcomes.
