Breakthrough Antibody 'SC27' Could Counter All COVID-19 Variants

Researchers at The University of Texas have discovered antibody 'SC27', which can neutralize all known coronavirus variants, including distant relatives infecting other animals. Isolated from breakthrough infection cases, this antibody could inform universal vaccine development, though the limited sample size leaves uncertainties about its prevalence in human populations.

A groundbreaking discovery at The University of Texas reveals an antibody, named 'SC27', capable of neutralizing all known variants of the coronavirus causing COVID-19, as well as related viruses infecting other animals.

The team, using plasma from patients with breakthrough infections, identified 'SC27' and published their findings in Cell Reports Medicine. The antibody targets the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, blocking the virus's ability to infect host cells.

While this discovery marks a significant step towards a universal vaccine, further research is required due to the limited sample size, cautioning about the commonality of such antibodies among human populations.
