India Launches First-Ever Hand Transplant Registry
India has introduced its first registry for patients needing hand transplants, managed by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). This initiative aims to boost transparent allocation and proper utilization of donated hands. Currently, nine hospitals are registered for performing such transplants in the country.

India has launched its first registry for patients requiring hand transplants, aiming to facilitate the transparent and prioritized allocation of donated organs.
The registry, maintained by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) under the Union Health Ministry, will boost both donation and utilization of hands, according to Dr. Subramania Iyer of Amrita Hospitals and School of Medicine, Kochi.
NOTTO Director Anil Kumar has informed all states and Union Territories about the registry, instructing compliance across hand transplant centers and hospitals. Currently, nine hospitals are registered for hand transplants in India, with 67 hands transplanted among 36 patients so far.
