Health Minister Dr. Shane Reti has announced updated guidance for the Health Research Council (HRC), emphasizing a stronger alignment with Government priorities to improve health outcomes for New Zealanders. The new guidance will shape future projects considered for funding, ensuring a focus on real-world impact.

The refreshed guidance is reflected in the two HRC funding opportunities currently available: Programme Grants and Emerging Researcher First Grants.

“The Health Research Council plays a crucial role in supporting our health system and the science sector,” said Dr. Reti, noting that the HRC allocated over $111 million in Government funding for research last year. “I fully support the Council in enabling this important research and am pleased that applicants are now encouraged to align more closely with our Government Policy Statement on Health.”

The updated focus will prioritize projects that contribute to improving timely access to quality healthcare, address high health needs, and support health system goals, particularly in mental health and addiction. Additionally, the guidance encourages collaborative approaches, delivering maximum value, and strengthening New Zealand’s health research workforce.

Dr. Reti highlighted a recent HRC-funded study led by two oncologists at Auckland City Hospital, which is testing a model for running clinical trials to ensure that cancer patients across New Zealand can access these trials, regardless of their location. “This research has the potential to benefit many thousands of New Zealanders and their families living with cancer,” he said.

With the two funding rounds underway, Dr. Reti expressed his anticipation for more exciting research opportunities to be considered by the HRC. “Every health dollar is precious, so we want research to deliver outcomes that will make a real difference in the lives of New Zealanders,” he added.

Dr. Reti looks forward to seeing the continued impact of the HRC’s work and hearing from successful applicants.
