Medical services were disrupted across Bihar on Saturday as doctors initiated a strike protesting the brutal rape and murder of a young lady doctor in Kolkata last week.

The strike, although sparing emergency services, formed part of a nationwide movement led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

'Starting from 6 AM, today's strike will continue for 24 hours, suspending routine OPDs and elective surgeries,' stated Sahajanand Prasad Singh, chief patron of the IMA's Bihar chapter.

Singh assured that 'All essential services will remain operational and emergency wards will be staffed' across hospitals in Bihar during the strike.

Beyond the state capital, where hospitals like AIIMS, IGIMS, and PMCH are major referral points, reports of disrupted health services also emerged from districts such as Purnea and Begusarai.

Despite no incidents of violence being reported in Bihar, doctors unanimously condemned the Kolkata tragedy and demanded adequate safety measures for medical professionals, particularly women.
