Nearly 4,000 resident doctors in Gujarat began an indefinite strike on Friday, joining a nationwide protest against the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.

The doctors, from around 20 medical colleges and attached hospitals, have refrained from carrying out routine ward duties and outpatient department (OPD) services. However, they continue to provide care for trauma and emergency cases.

Despite alternative measures being taken to manage OPD patients at government hospitals, officials acknowledged that services had been disrupted due to the strike. The impacted facilities included Ahmedabad civil hospital, where around 1,000 resident doctors joined the protest.
