A 59-year-old man was trapped in a lift at Government Medical College Hospital for two days before being rescued by a lift operator on Monday morning, police reported.

Ravindran Nair, a patient from Ulloor, became stuck in the malfunctioning lift on Saturday. His attempts to call for help went unanswered, and his phone battery died, rendering him unable to seek further assistance.

This alarming episode has led the health department to suspend three staff members, including two lift operators and a duty sergeant. Additionally, Health Minister Veena George has called for an investigation.

Nair's family had filed a missing person report on Sunday night. Upon his rescue, Nair recounted his distressing experience, including his unanswered emergency calls and sounding alarms. He ultimately managed to escape with the aid of the lift operator on Monday morning.

Opposition Leader V D Satheesan criticized the incident, calling for the health minister's resignation and questioning the hospital's operational standards.
