A recent survey by the Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation reveals that 67% of cancer patients undergoing treatment in private hospitals, and 33% in government hospitals, seek second opinions. This is to ensure their treatment is on the right path and they have access to the latest medications.

Conducted between March 1 and May 31 this year, the survey involved 1,769 cancer patients who contacted the foundation's helpline. Most calls came from Hyderabad, Meerut, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

Dr. Ashish Gupta, a senior oncologist leading the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign, explained, 'New medicines are approved almost every week, necessitating a second opinion to ensure the best treatment.' The campaign also operates a free helpline, which Dr. Gupta claims receives over 50 daily calls from across India.

The helpline operates from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday. It connects cancer patients with leading oncologists via phone or video calls at no cost. The survey indicates high eagerness among both government and private hospital patients to seek second opinions.

Dr. Gupta emphasized that the first step in cancer treatment is crucial. 'Second opinions can ensure the use of the latest medicines and treatment methods, which vary from hospital to hospital,' he noted.

Technological advancements, greater patient awareness, and internationally trained experts are driving the increased demand for second opinions in cancer care, according to Dr. Gupta.
