New Zealand’s Health Minister, Dr. Shane Reti, has announced a significant increase in the country’s health workforce, according to the latest data. This growth is a testament to the government’s commitment to bolstering the healthcare system and improving patient outcomes.

The recent workforce data reveals a substantial rise in the number of healthcare professionals, with hospitals employing more nurses than ever before. The figures stand at 29,404 full-time equivalent (FTE) nurses, marking an increase of 1,198 from the previous quarter and 2,900 over the past year.

Health NZ has also reported increases in its registered medical officers (RMOs) and senior medical officers (SMOs), with 4,950 RMO FTEs and 5,452 SMO FTEs currently employed. This represents an increase of 309 and 94 FTEs, respectively, from the last quarter.

The midwifery sector has reached record employment levels, with 1,117 FTEs working across various districts, an increase of 76 FTEs from the previous quarter. Allied health workers, scientific and technical staff, as well as care and support workers, have also seen growth this quarter.

Addressing the New Zealand Association of Medical Students, Dr. Reti acknowledged the ongoing challenges but expressed optimism about the positive trends. The government’s recent budget allocation of $16.68 billion for 2024 is aimed at retaining frontline healthcare workers and includes funding for 25 additional medical school places each year, starting in 2025.

Dr. Reti recognized existing gaps in the workforce but remains encouraged by the progress made this year. The government’s focus on expanding the health workforce is a critical step towards achieving its ambitious healthcare targets and ensuring the provision of quality services to New Zealanders.
