In a significant move to support the agricultural sector, the Union Cabinet has sanctioned a Rs 37,216 crore subsidy for phosphatic and potassic fertilisers for the upcoming Kharif season in 2025.
Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cabinet's decision is part of the government's strategy to ensure farmers receive soil nutrients at affordable rates. The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed that this substantial subsidy would maintain current retail prices for essential fertilisers like Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP).
The budgetary requirement for this subsidy exceeds the allocation for the Rabi 2024-25 season by approximately Rs 13,000 crore. This measure will guarantee that 28 grades of fertilisers remain accessible to farmers, governed under the Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme initiated in 2010.
