India should brace for a significant increase in peak electricity demand this summer, with growth projected at 9-10%, experts have warned. This surge is attributed to more frequent heatwaves as climate change intensifies.
As of last year, India reached an unprecedented peak electricity demand of over 250 GW. Household consumption, accounting for 28% of total usage, has seen the most rapid growth, largely due to economic expansion and a growing need for cooling solutions in higher temperatures. Disha Agarwal from the Council on Energy, Environment and Water emphasizes the rapid rise in room air conditioner sales.
However, the current trend raises concerns. Abhas Jha of the World Bank highlights the inefficiency in India's air conditioning market, warning that it could hinder efforts to combat climate change. With air conditioner penetration in the country at a mere 8%, compared to 90% in developed nations, the demand is expected to escalate, raising questions about energy sustainability.
