India's Cotton Production Slump: Lower Yields Impact 2024-25 Output
The Cotton Association of India has reduced the cotton output estimate for the 2024-25 season to 295.30 lakh bales due to lower yields, compared to 327.45 lakh bales in the 2023-24 season. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) announced on Tuesday a significant reduction in its cotton output estimate for the 2024-25 season, citing lower yields as the main cause. The association now projects production to reach 295.30 lakh bales, a substantial decrease from the 327.45 lakh bales recorded in the 2023-24 season.
According to CAI data, as of February-end 2025, total cotton supply is anticipated to be 275.76 lakh bales. This figure includes 223.57 lakh bales pressed, 22 lakh bales imported, and an opening stock of 30.19 lakh bales. By that time, consumption is expected to reach 142 lakh bales, with exports estimated at 9 lakh bales.
In a related adjustment, the CAI has revised its forecast for total cotton supply by the end of the 2024-25 season, bringing it to 355.49 lakh bales from an earlier estimate of 357.94 lakh bales. Domestic consumption is retained at 315 lakh bales, while expected exports have been lowered to 17 lakh bales, a significant drop from 28.36 lakh bales in the previous year.
