Moldova is striving to reduce energy usage and import from Romania.
The breakaway Moldovan region of Transdniestria has been hit by a severe gas crisis as Russia halted its gas supplies via Ukraine, leading to heating and hot water shortages for its 450,000 residents. This unexpected disruption has immediate effects, especially with winter conditions setting in.
Local energy supplier Tirasteploenergo confirmed the cessation of heating from Wednesday morning, although critical facilities like hospitals are still being served. Residents are urged to gather in fewer rooms and rely on electric heaters while avoiding risky heating methods.
Moldova is navigating this crisis by cutting energy consumption and increasing imports from Romania, while Transdniestria's parliament calls for fresh negotiations with Russia for resuming gas supply. The issue also revives political tensions concerning energy debts claimed by Russia.
