On November 13, 2024, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, flagged off 10 battery-operated vehicles at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. This initiative, launched under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA), is designed to promote sustainable mobility and improve accessibility for visitors, particularly senior citizens and individuals with disabilities (Divyangs), at the iconic heritage site.
A Step Toward Sustainable Mobility and Heritage Preservation
The eco-friendly vehicles will offer visitors an accessible, green transport option within the temple complex, reducing the carbon footprint and improving the overall experience for those visiting the sacred site. Minister Joshi, during the flag-off ceremony, highlighted the importance of integrating sustainable solutions at cultural landmarks. "The deployment of battery-operated vehicles at this historic temple underscores our commitment to green energy and offers visitors an accessible and environmentally friendly transport option," said Joshi. He further emphasized that IREDA’s CSR efforts reflect the agency's dedication to supporting India’s green mission while improving the visitor experience at major heritage locations.
IREDA’s Role in Sustainable Mobility
Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of IREDA, expressed his pride in the initiative, saying, “IREDA is honoured to contribute to the development of eco-friendly transport solutions at heritage sites through our CSR initiatives. This project is aligned with our broader mission of promoting sustainable and renewable energy solutions in every facet of life.” Das added that the initiative not only provides green mobility options but also highlights IREDA's commitment to supporting the preservation of cultural heritage through innovative, sustainable solutions.
The vehicles are expected to significantly improve the accessibility of the temple for the elderly and disabled, offering them a more comfortable and convenient way to explore the sacred precincts without having to endure long walks, particularly on the temple's expansive grounds.
The Role of IREDA and MNRE in Green Energy Solutions
The event was attended by key officials, including Dr. B. K. Mohanty, Director (Finance) of IREDA, and other senior representatives from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, and IREDA. After the flag-off ceremony, Minister Joshi, along with CMD IREDA, Dr. Mohanty, and other officials, visited the Lord Jagannath Temple to offer prayers, marking the occasion with a spiritual gesture that aligns with the cultural significance of the project.
Looking Ahead: Enhancing Heritage Site Accessibility
This project is part of IREDA's broader initiative to implement renewable energy and eco-friendly solutions at culturally and historically significant locations across India. With the growing focus on green energy and sustainability, such initiatives align with India’s vision of a cleaner, greener future while preserving the sanctity and cultural importance of its heritage sites. Through this program, IREDA not only supports India’s green energy mission but also contributes to enhancing the quality of life for visitors at major pilgrimage and tourist destinations.
This initiative exemplifies the intersection of sustainability, technology, and heritage conservation, offering a model for future projects that blend innovation with environmental consciousness at important cultural landmarks across the country.
