Wheat Sowing Gains Momentum Despite Delayed Paddy Harvests

Wheat sowing in India is progressing well and is expected to increase despite delayed paddy harvests in northern states, according to Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi. Favorable weather conditions are boosting operations, although temperature spikes in early 2024 remain a concern for yield. Climate-resistant varieties are being promoted.

Wheat sowing in India is making significant headway, with expectations of further acceleration in the coming days, as stated by Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi on Monday. Despite delays in paddy harvests in key northern states, wheat cultivation has surpassed last year's area coverage for this period.

Chaturvedi highlighted the conducive soil moisture and weather conditions currently aiding wheat sowing activities, which have led to an increased demand for fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate (DAP). The sowing is also anticipated to speed up in Punjab and Haryana, where recent monsoon rains delayed the paddy harvest.

However, Chaturvedi warned that the months of January and February are crucial for crop development. A rise in temperature during this period might threaten wheat yields. To mitigate weather-related challenges, the government is encouraging farmers to adopt climate-resistant wheat varieties. Additionally, the planting of other winter crops like mustard and chickpeas is also reportedly progressing well.
