Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh endorsed the concept of 'One Nation One Election' on Friday, noting that the call for such reform has been longstanding. He expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party would rally behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring this significant electoral change to fruition. Singh's comments came in light of ongoing discussions regarding the potential benefits of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Kevadia, Gujarat, reiterated his administration's commitment to the 'One Nation One Poll' framework. He emphasized that aligning election schedules would bolster the nation's democratic processes, optimize resource utilization, and help propel India toward becoming a developed nation. The Prime Minister also linked the initiative with efforts to establish a unified civil code across the country.
Despite these assurances, opposition parties remain unconvinced. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge labeled the proposal as impractical. In his reaction to PM Modi's address, Kharge stressed that such a policy requires broad legislative consensus, which he deemed unlikely. The Congress party's stance underscores the polarizing nature of this proposed electoral reform.
