Tensions Rise Over Paddy Procurement in Haryana: Farmers Struggle Amid Promises and Delays
Paddy procurement in Haryana faces criticism amidst successful initial buys. The state purchased over 36 lakh tonnes at MSP, disbursing Rs 5,537 crore directly to farmers. However, former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda claims slow purchase and liftings compel farmers to sell below MSP. Fertilizer shortages exacerbate the issue.

The bustling paddy procurement season in Haryana has been a mix of achievements and challenges. While the state government reports a successful purchase of over 36 lakh tonnes of paddy at minimum support price, the process is under scrutiny for alleged delays and inefficiencies that have left farmers in distress.
According to an official release, the Haryana government has been ensuring timely payment, with Rs 5,537 crore disbursed directly into farmers' bank accounts. Yet, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda criticizes the current administration for faltering on election promises, forcing farmers to sell at lower prices due to sluggish procurement and delayed payment processes.
Compounding the farmers' woes are fertilizer shortages, which Hooda accuses the government of ignoring. He alleges that farmers wait in lengthy queues for fertilizers, only to resort to buying at inflated black market prices. The government's focus on stubble burning penalties further adds to the farmers' plight as they await long-promised support amidst mounting storage issues in mandis.
