The Election Commission of India has officially confirmed the appointment of Ajay Kumar Singh as the new Director General of Police for Jharkhand. Singh, a senior officer within the Indian Police Service, was chosen from a list of three candidates proposed by the State Government, following the Commission's directive for the expedited removal of acting DGP Anurag Gupta.

Anurag Gupta's dismissal, ordered on October 19, stems from a history of alleged electoral misconduct in previous elections, emphasizing the Election Commission's commitment to upholding integrity during the election period. This leadership change occurs as the Commission recently announced upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

The state of Jharkhand is gearing up for elections across 81 assembly seats, to be conducted in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The counting process is scheduled for November 23. In the last electoral bout in 2019, the United Progressive Alliance emerged victorious by securing 47 seats, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party, which claimed 25 seats.
