In a significant legal development, Delhi's Karkardooma Court has decided to grant interim bail to Shadab Ahmad, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case, enabling him to attend his sister's wedding. The court's decision came amidst resistance from Delhi police, who highlighted the lack of Ahmad's permanent ties to the region.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai sanctioned Ahmad's temporary release for eight days, allowing him to fulfill familial duties at his sister's nuptials in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. The court emphasized the elder brother's critical role in wedding ceremonies, within his ancestral village.
Shadab Ahmad, arrested on May 20, 2020, under the UAPA, has been in judicial custody for over three years. Previous bail requests were declined. Despite law enforcement's objections, the court acknowledged Ahmad's obligations, requiring his return to custody by November 5, 2024.
