Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar has condemned the police's use of force on protestors at the Shri Muthyalamma Devi temple, criticizing the government for focusing on the protestors rather than addressing the crime itself. "Instead of holding the vandal accountable, the government targets those protesting against this act," Sanjay posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.
Bandi Sanjay visited the home of a protestor injured in the lathi charge in Secunderabad on the same day. Earlier, Telangana Police had charged at protestors gathered at the temple in Hyderabad to protest the alleged vandalism of a temple idol, an act which drew a large crowd.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal called for a statewide 'bandh' to protest against perceived attacks on Hindu temples in Telangana. These demonstrations reflect growing anxiety over the security of Hindu temples, with protestors voicing their discontent over recent alleged desecrations.
The VHP has accused the state government of failing to stop such attacks, prompting the protests. National Spokesperson Vinod Bansal declared that demonstrations would be organized in every district. Hyderabad has seen two idol vandalism incidents, sparking outcry from the BJP and several religious groups.
The first incident involved vandalism of a Durga idol at a Puja pandal in Hyderabad's Begum Bazar area. Police indicated the act was unintentional, committed by a vagabond seeking food, yet BJP leaders urged a detailed probe. A separate incident at the Muthyalamma temple in Secunderabad caused widespread unrest. Union Minister and BJP state president G Kishan Reddy visited the site and condemned the desecration.
Local residents apprehended and handed over a suspect, identified as Salman Salim Thakur, to the authorities. Police noted Thakur was in Hyderabad for a personality development course. BJP leaders have called for an NIA investigation into the incidents.
